Last autumn we went to visit Weingut Blankenhorn in Baden and returned with their beautiful Schliengen Chasselas Le Clocher 2019 for their US debut.

The winery is located in the center of Schliengen in Markgräflerland, in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland.

The Markgräflerland wine growing region is known for Gutedel, which is also recognized as Chasselas in France and Fendant in Switzerland.

Fritz Blankenhorn’s family ran the winery for five generations. When Rosie Blankenhorn, known as Roy, could not find a successor among her daughters, she handed it over to Yvonne and Martin Männer in 2014.

Yvonne und Martin Männer who in 2014 took ownership of the Winery that dates back to 1847 live and love this often underestimated variety and work on its immense, multi-layered potential: From the easy-drinking estate wine to the first-class single-vineyard wine with unmistakable individuality, the couples passion also applies to the great Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties, which they find in the Estates ideal terroir.

Since 1987 Blankenhorn have been a member of the VDP. Yvonne and Martin feel just as committed to the quality guidelines of the VDP as to those of Fair’n Green, a certification for sustainable viticulture.

A recent renovation and restoration of the Winery’s building that dates back to 1624 included the installation of state of the art wine making facilities. The modern building is based on the principle of gravity, the grapes are moved with the help of gravity.

The Schliengen Chasselas Le Clocher 2019 displays a fine, elegant structure. A perfect combination of light fruits and an invigorating acidity, it undergoes spontaneous fermentation, with at least 10 months storage in barrels on lees. Part malolactic fermentation adds body and richness. Ideal pairing dishes include zucchini and tomato casserole and cauliflower casserole coated in nuts.

We are delighted to present this gem of a wine from this top VDP producer in Baden’s Markgräflerland.

If you like fruity, fresh and palatable wines that are easy to drink then Gutedel might just be something new to explore for you.
